Al Shamkha is one of Abu Dhabi’s newest residential districts, on the eastern side of the mainland beyond Shakhbout City towards the Al Ain road and the airport. It is largely national housing: rows of newly completed family villas on wide streets, with Al Shamkha South, Makers District and Alreeman adding villas, townhouses and apartments. Most residents are Emirati families moving into their first completed home, so a huge share of moves here are first move-ins from a rented villa or apartment elsewhere in the city.

A first move-in is a specific job. The house is brand new, so floors, stairs and door frames get runners and corner guards before the first box comes in. Furniture is often a mix of the old home and new pieces delivered by stores on the same week, and we schedule around those deliveries. The streets are wide and the driveway takes a truck, so access is simple. In summer the crew starts at 7 am, and we ask that water and electricity be connected before the day.
